Box Office Battle: 'It: Chapter Two' looking to scare off competition

Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.

IT SEQUEL FLOATS INTO THEATERS: AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros.' horror film sequel "It: Chapter Two" is looking to kick off the Fall movie season, opening at 4,570 theaters domestically. The film, adapted from a Stephen King novel, already earned $10.5M from preview showings Thursday night, and is looking to domestically gross $105M or more in its first weekend at theaters.

ALSO PLAYING: No other film is expected to earn much more than $5M this weekend, with Lionsgate (LGF.A, LGF.B) and Millennium's action film "Angel Has Fallen," Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal's R-rated comedy "Good Boys," Disney's (DIS) live-action remake of "The Lion King," and Sony (SNE) and AFFIRM's faith-based drama "Overcomer" expected to round out the top five.

OVERALL DOMESTIC PROJECTIONS:

  • It: Chapter Two: $105M+
  • Angel has Fallen: $5.5M
  • Good Boys: $5.25M
  • The Lion King: $4.5M
  • Overcomer: $3.7M

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include CBS (CBS) and Viacom (VIA, VIAB).
